REASSESSING REAGAN
Parade Magazine, Intelligence Report by Lyric Wallwork Winik, June 5, 2005, page 14.
Today marks one year since Ronald Reagan's death at 93, and we asked Gil Troy,
author of Morning in America to assess Reagan's legacy beyond winning the Cold War.
He noted that Reagan was a polarizing President but "history can be healing,
and many former adversaries don't hate him as much today." Troy's other observations:
Reagan talked as a traditionalist, but he was more of a modern figure-the first divorced
President and the first to host an openly gay couple in the White House. He was a great
storyteller and a good writer but his rhetoric didn't reach out to minorities and
intellectuals. "And by highlighting what we own as a measure of success," said Troy,
"he also fed our relentless pressure to shop. We still live in a Reaganized America."
